PREREQUISITES

FOR ADMISSION TO THE BACHELOR'S COURSE, THE FOLLOWING PREREQUISITES MUST BE MET

For admission to the study course, the applicant must have passed an aptitude test. The aptitude test consists of three stages. For admission to the aptitude test, the application documents must have been submitted promptly and in the correct form.

LIST OF DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED

Bachelor of Arts

The application portal is expected to be open from October / November 2024

  • Fully completed application form with affixed passport photo
  • Tabular curriculum vitae (unbroken career history up to the time of the application)
  • Copy of birth certificate or copy of personal ID or copy of passport or copy of residence permit (no certified copies; documents will not be returned)
  • Copy of the last school or university leaving certificate (no certified copies; documents will not be returned)
  • If appropriate, evidence (internship certificates, etc.) of practical activities in the theatre or other cultural institutions
  • A brief letter of motivation (at most one typewritten A4 page; 12-point font), explaining which of the applicant?s specific areas of knowledge, interests and abilities that he/she considers particularly qualify him/her for the bachelor course in Directing - Music Theatre and Drama
  • Conception of a theatre project: This can be the director's conception of a scene of a theatre text (spoken or musical theatre) as well as drafts of other theatrical-performative projects (maximum two A4 pages; font size 12). The concept must include stage designs, mood boards and figurines. These do not count towards the two pages. If it is not a work from the established canon, the original text and the line version (of the selected scene) must be enclosed.
  • Evidence of payment of the fee for the aptitude test (€ 30) in the form of a copy of the bank statement or cash payment receipt
  • For foreign applicants from non-German-speaking countries: Language certificate with at least level B1 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). The certificate must be submitted at the latest at the time of enrolment at the beginning of the summer semester.

For admission to the aptitude procedure, the documents must be submitted in due time and in the correct form.

APTITUDE TEST PROCEDURE

Bachelor of Arts

Stage One of the Aptitude Test

The examination board draws up a shortlist from the approved applications. This involves the examination board assessing the submitted documents, by making an overall artistic judgement, according to the following criteria:

  • Aesthetic-artistic value of the submitted concept
  • Practical artistic experience and personal career
    Written communication skills

Stage Two of the Aptitude Test

In the second stage, the aptitude test consists of an interview (time: approx. 20 minutes). The interview focuses on the candidate's theatrical and cultural understanding. The questions may particularly be about the aesthetics of contemporary theatre and other cultural techniques, on cultural as well as theatrical history and current cultural-political issues. The selection interview will also examine the applicant's ability to discuss interpretation questions.


Stage Three of the Aptitude Test

The third stage of the aptitude test consists of a working seminar (test duration: approx. 30 minutes). The examination board may in particular set the following tasks:

  1. Oral description of a directorial concept (prepared) on a given theatre text. The available theatre texts will be announced with the invitation to the aptitude test. Assessment criteria: meaningfulness and aesthetic-artistic value of the approach to interpretation, scenic imagination, understandability and efficiency of the exposition, oral communication skills.
  2. Submit a sketch of a stage design for the work chosen under No. 1 (prepared). Assessment criteria: Creative ability, sense of style, artistic and technical ability, pictorial imagination.
  3. Practical work on scenes selected by the examination board from the work chosen under No. 1 (the scenes selected by the examination board will be announced on the eve of the working seminar). Assessment criteria: Observing and describing staged sequences, corrections, sensitivity in dealing with actors.

Applicants who have passed the aptitude test will be tested at a later time (date will be notified by the Munich Academy of Music and Theatre) in the mandatory subject of piano in order to ascertain their level of knowledge. It is desirable to have prior knowledge at the time of the aptitude test.

The applicants will receive the overall result of the aptitude test in writing.

A failed aptitude test can be repeated once.

The first two semesters at the Theaterakademie are considered a probationary period.

The course instructors and lecturers of the individual fields are available to the students for study guidance.

Master of Arts

AS PART OF THE REACCREDITATION AND RESTRUCTURING OF THE DEGREE PROGRAM, THE APTITUDE PROCEDURE FOR THE MASTER'S DEGREE PROGRAM IN DIRECTING WILL BE SUSPENDED IN THE SUMMER SEMESTER. THE NEW DATES ARE AS FOLLOWS:

FOR ADMISSION TO THE MASTERS COURSE, THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET

For admission to the study course, applicants must fulfill the following criteria:

  • Hold a first higher education degree or equivalent qualification from Germany or abroad in the fields of theatre, music and visual arts or related subjects
  • Pass an aptitude procedure at the Theaterakademie August Everding

Master of Arts

  • Fully completed application form with affixed passport photo
  • Tabular curriculum vitae (unbroken career history up to the time of the application)

  • If appropriate, evidence (internship certificates, etc.) of practical activities in the theatre or other cultural institutions
  • A brief letter of motivation (at most one typewritten A4 page; 12-point font), explaining which of the applicant?s specific areas of knowledge, interests and abilities that he/she considers particularly qualify him/her for the master course in Directing - Music Theatre and Drama
  • A filmed documentation of a theatre project (provided via Vimeo or a comparable platform, not on DVD) in which the applicant was involved as director or in a comparable artistic-directorial function.
  • Written explanation (approx. 10,000 characters) of the project submitted via Vimeo or a comparable platform, presenting the conceptual approach and including a self-assessment.
  • Written conception (maximum three A4 pages, font size 12) of a theatre project that has not yet been realised. This can be the directorial conception of a scene of a theatre text (spoken or musical theatre) as well as drafts of other theatrical-performative projects. Stage designs, mood boards and figurines must be added to the concept. These do not count towards the three pages. If it is not a work from the established canon, the original text and the line version (of the selected scene) must be enclosed.
  • Declaration that the submitted essay, the explanatory notes on the theatre project as well as the concept were prepared independently and the applicant was involved in the production of the project documented via Vimeo or a comparable platform.
  • For foreign applicants from non-German-speaking countries: Language certificate with at least level B1 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). The certificate must be submitted at the latest at the time of enrolment at the beginning of the summer semester.

For admission to the aptitude procedure, the documents must be submitted in due time and in the correct form.

Master of Arts

Stage One of the Aptitude Procedure

The examination board draws up a shortlist from the approved applications. (Stage One of the Aptitude Procedure). This involves the examination board assessing the documents according to section 3, paragraph 1, by making an overall artistic judgement, according to the following criteria:

  • Scenic imagination and aesthetics
  • Artistic-stylistic independence
  • Written communication skills

Stage Two of the Aptitude Procedure

The second stage of the aptitude procedure consists of an artistic-practical test (rehearsal, test time approx. 120 minutes), as well as a colloquium (test time approx. 20 minutes).

As part of the artistic-practical test, the examination board sets practical tasks on the requirements according to section 2, clauses 2 to 4. The content of the tasks may refer to the directorial concept submitted for section 3, para. 1, No. 4 or other scenes from the area of music theatre or drama. The examination committee assesses the artistic-practical test as part of an overall artistic judgement, according to the following criteria:

  • Leading of actors
  • Scenic imagination
  • Artistic-stylistic independence

The colloquium includes the following subject matter:

  • Capacity for critical reflection in the field of theatre- and media-theoretical as well as aesthetic questions, particularly taking into account the documents submitted according to section 3, para. 1 Nos. 2 to 4
  • Solid knowledge of dramaturgy in the areas of drama and music theatre

The applicants will be notified of the overall result of the aptitude procedure in writing.

A failed aptitude procedure can be repeated once.

Students can approach the course instructors and lecturers of the individual fields for study guidance.

A fee of € 30 will be charged for taking part in the aptitude test.

SEMESTER FEES

A basic contribution of € 85 is charged per semester as a student union membership fee. The semester ticket for public transport has been abolished, which is why students are recommended to purchase the Deutschlandticket.
